Two Japanese films took home prizes at the 68th Venice Film Festival, which concluded on September 10th. Sometani Shota (19) and Nikaido Fumi (16), the co-stars of Sono Sion‘s adaptation of the manga “Himizu,” both received the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress, while Tsukamoto Shinya‘s “KOTOKO” received the Orizzonti Award in the full-length film category.

This is the first time that a Japanese person has won the Marcello Mastroianni Award, which was established in 1998.

“KOTOKO,” starring singer Cocco in her first lead role, is also the first Japanese film to win the Orizzonti Award.

“Himizu” and “KOTOKO” are both scheduled to make their theatrical premieres in Japan next spring.
