Hello! Project Shuffle Units

In March of 2000, Tsunku divided the 16 members of the Hello! Project into three groups, which he called "shuffle units." Tsunku proposed a challenge to each group: they would each release a single on the same day and compete to see who could sell the most copies. It was a success, with Akagumi 4 winning the challenge. The shuffle unit tradition continued for six more years but appears to have been abandoned after 2006. Between 2004 and 2006 the shuffle unit songs were released on maxi singles rather than on individual singles, thus eliminating the competition aspect. Aside from the original units and the 2004 super group, shuffle units were active during the summer. In December 2008 a CD/DVD titled Hello! Project Shuffle Units Mega Best was released.
