History

Akira joined Johnny's Entertainment on February 15, 1986 at age 12. However, his history as a performer started before that. He had performed in the Peter Pan musical from 1984 to 1986 as John. In 1987, he debuted with the group Hikaru GENJI. At the time, he was still in junior high, as such he was sometimes absent from performances. In the group, he was frequently paired with Sato Atsuhiro, even in radio programmes. He was also part of the short-lived unit AKIRA & KOHJI with Uchiumi Kouji.

After Hikaru GENJI disbanded in 1995, he started a solo career during which he released 3 singles and 1 album.

On October 28, 2007, he was arrested for amphetamine possession and subsequently fired from the company. He received an 18-month sentence that was suspended for three years.

At the end of 2009, it was revealed that he had opened a karaoke bar in Shinjuku with some former Johnny's Junior members. However on December 28, 2009, he was arrested after testing positive for drugs.
