An album in this context refers a full length musical album. Full length albums are typically 11-20 songs, depending on the track time, however they can range from 2 songs to 30 or more. The most accurate way of determining a full-length album, however, is the length of the whole recording. Standard CD can hold 80 minutes of music, full albums are typically 65 minutes or more long.

Full length Vinyl records or LPs were the primary music format for decades until the 1980s, which introduced cassette tapes and later CDs. The LP (started January 5th 1970) and CT (started December 2nd 1974) Charts both ended on January 5th 1970, and the CD sales took over for Oricon's Album Chart. In November 2016, Oricon established a chart for Digital Album Sales.
