Harem

Harem (ハーレムもの) (short for Haremumono) is a genre of manga and anime in Japan. The genre is characterized by a protagonist surrounded, usually by large amounts, of two or more members of the opposite sex. The most common is a male-oriented harem anime where the main male character is surrounded by a group of females. In the opposite form it is referred to as a reverse harem, or gyakuharemu (逆ハーレム). Although most harems or reverse harems are for the opposite sex there is also yuri and yaoi harems where the protagonist is surrounded by a group of the same sex.

Popular harem manga and anime include Elfen Lied, Love Hina, and Kanon.

Popular reverse harem manga and anime include Hana Yori Dango, Angelique, and Ouran High School Host Club.
