NMB48 (2022)

NMB48 is a Japanese idol group produced by Akimoto Yasushi. It performs regularly in the NMB48 Theater, previously known as base YOSHIMOTO.

History

2010 - 2011: Theater Debut

To continue his plan for a franchise of idol groups in Japan, Akimoto Yasushi announced that he would start an idol group in Nanba, Osaka. NMB48's name comes from NaMBa, an alternate romanization of Nanba.

Auditions were held in August 2010, and were broadcast on the TV show "Starhime Sagashitarou", which featured members of SKE48. Initially, 26 girls passed but there will still be inter-auditions to pick the 16 girls who will be Team N. The 26 girls were introduced on October 9th, 2010 at AKB48's Aki Matsuri.

On December 4, 2010, NMB48 announced that Team N and its captain will be announced at the shonichi performance of Team N's first stage. The remaining members will remain kenkyuusei.

On January 1, 2011, NMB48 started performances of its first stage. On March 10, 2011 Team N was formed.

In June 2011, it was announced that NMB48 would be making their single debut with "Zetsumetsu Kurokami Shoujo" on July 20, several months after their first original song Seishun no Lap Time was being performed in the theater. After its release, the single broke the record for largest debut first-week sales for a female artist. On June 6, the second generation winners were announced at the end of Team N's performance at TDC Hall. The introduction of the 2nd generation brought the total number of members in NMB48 to their goal number of 48. NMB48 also participated in their first AKB48 Senbatsu Election on the 8th. Yamamoto Sayaka, at #28, was the only member to rank in the election.

In August 2011, photos of 2nd generation member Shimada Rena with a boyfriend surfaced on the internet. Initially, no action was taking regarding the photos, but as more photos surfaced and as other scandals were brought to attention by fans, Shimada was suspended from activities for the rest of 2011 starting in September. At this time, Yoshida Akari and Matsuda Shiori were also suspended due to issues balancing school work with work, and Yoshida, Kondo Rina and Watanabe Miyuki were removed from the preliminary senbatsu for NMB's second single due to undisclosed reasons, and replaced with Yamaguchi Yuuki, Yamagishi Natsumi and Murakami Ayaka.

2012 - 2013: Team M and BII formation

In Janaury 2012, NMB48 formed their second team, Team M, with 16 members. Shimada Rena was appointed as the team's captain. Team M performed their first stage, "Idol no Yoake," in May. Following AKB48's introduction of the concurrent (兼任; kennin) position, it was also announced that Team N member Watanabe Miyuki would hold a concurrency with AKB48's Team B.

In February 2012, the third generation winners were announced, consisting of 23 members. The group also released their third single, "Junjou U-19," on the 8th.

On May 9, 2012, the group released their fourth single, "Nagiichi." It became the group's best-selling single after its first week of release, selling 375,000 units according on Oricon. It was also the group's first single that did not chart #1 on the weekly charts, which was achieved by ARASHI's single "Face Down."

In August 2012, NMB48 released their fifth single, "Virginity," on the 8th. The single marked the first appearance of the third generation, with members Kato Yuuka and Yabushita Shu also appearing in Senbatsu. On the 24th, during AKB48's Tokyo Dome concert and team shuffle, two member changes were announced for NMB48. AKB48 member Yokoyama Yui would hold a concurrency with NMB48, and Team N member Kotani Riho would hold a concurrency with AKB48 Team A.

In October 2012, NMB48 formed their third team, Team BII, with 16 members. The team primarily consisted of third generation members, with Kamieda Emika being appointed as the team's captain.

On November 7th, 2012, NMB48 released their sixth single, "Kitagawa Kenji (NMB48)," named after the titular staff member. It marked the group's fourth single in 2012 alone, the first appearance of Yokoyama Yui as an NMB48 member, and the first after the formation of Team BII.

In December 2012, the fourth generation winners were announced, consisting of 16 members.

On February 27, 2013, NMB48 released their first album, Teppen Tottande! The album debuted #1 on the Oricon chart, with first-week sales of 328,000 units.
