2013-15: Pre-debut

On December 19, 2013, JYP Entertainment announced that they would debut a new girl group in the first half of 2014, the first female group to come out of the company since the debut of miss A in 2010. On February 27, 2014, well-known JYP trainees Lena and Cecilia were confirmed as members of the group, while other rumored members included JYP trainees Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jihyo (going by "Ji Soo"), and Min Young. After Cecilia's departure, JYP trainee Sana replaced her and 6mix, the group name at that point, was about to debut when Lena left the company, effectively canceling their debut.

On February 11, 2015, Park Jin Young announced that the lineup of JYP's upcoming seven member girl group would be decided through Sixteen, a competition survival show that would air on Mnet later that year. Park explained in a press conference prior to the show's airing that he hoped the group would "have the Wonder Girls' and miss A's natural, healthy feel, with an edgier and wilder side. I want to upgrade this next group by adding elements like hip-hop and rap." The show began on May 5th and ended with Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung as the seven TWICE members. In a surprise announcement, JYP announced that he would be increasing the size of the group from 7 members to 9 and adding Tzuyu, who did not make the last cut, and Momo, who was cut earlier in the program. Tzuyu was added to the group as the "audience's pick" since she was the most popular contestant by the show's end and Momo was added by JYP himself since he felt the group needed someone with Momo's performance abilities. The decision was controversial at the time with many people complaining about eliminated contestants being able to join the group.

On 10 July 2015, TWICE opened their official Instagram account with the first picture of the nine members posing together. JYP Entertainment released TWICE TV, a web series that shared the members' hopes and stories through interviews and followed them as they prepared for their debut.

2015: Debut & Popularity Rise

TWICE promoting The Story Begins (2015)

On October 7, 2015, JYP Entertainment launched the band's official website and announced via SNS that the group would debut with the mini-album The Story Begins and title-track "OOH-AHH Hage". The track was described as a 'color pop' dance track with elements of hip-hop, rock, and R&B. The composition team included Black Eyed Pilseung, known for composing successful releases such as miss A's "Dareun Namja Malgo Neo." On October 20th, the album and the song's music video were released online and through the Naver V App. The group held a live showcase the same day, where they performed "OHH-AHH Hage" along with dance tracks "Michyeossnabwa" and "Dasi Haejwo". The MV hit 1 million views in under 24 hours and totaled 50 million views within 5 months of their debut. It became the most-viewed debut music video for any K-Pop group, replacing 2NE1's "Fire".

By December, TWICE had signed ten CF contracts, totaling earnings of ₩1.8 billion. This is the most for any rookie girl group after only a month since their debut. On December 27th, the band performed a remix version of their single "OOH-AHH Hage" at SBS Gayo Daejeon, TWICE's first-ever attendance on a year-end music program.

2016: Controversy & TWICEcoaster: LANE 1

On January 2, 2016, TWICE's debut mini-album climbed back up the music charts, even though it had been over two months since its release. Due to their popularity, JYP announced on the 6th that TWICE would be doing another round of promotions on music shows. On January 12th, Chinese netizens pointed out that Tzuyu's profile stated her nationality as Taiwanese instead of Chinese. Many Chinese fans were displeased, as although Taiwan has its own self-sustaining government, that it still in fact belongs to China, which is a topic that is still heavily debated. Chinese fans saw this as Tzuyu showing her patriotism towards Taiwan and not towards China. On January 13th, JYP suspended all of Tzuyu's activities in China and changed all of the member's profiles from "nationality" to "place of birth". However, this did not appease netizens. It was revealed that this was not the original controversy, but that last November, on the recording of MBC's My Little Television, Tzuyu held up both the Korean and Taiwanese flag. The segment was not broadcast, but Chinese netizens found out about it anyway. On the 15th, an official apology was issued from JYP as well as an apology video by Tzuyu herself. Following the apologetic video,JYP Entertainment's website was hacked. Although the culprits were never determined, many believed it was Taiwanese netizens who were upset with video. The video also caused further controversy, as many berated the company for their lack of support and wondered if they'd forced Tzuyu to apologize. JYP released a statement on January 18th denying these claims, saying that "Tzuyu's parents came to Korea, talked to Tzuyu, made the decisions, and handled the apology." The next day, famous Taiwanese figures pressed charges against the company for allegedly forcing Tzuyu to apologize, and on the 27th an investigation into JYPE began to uncover whether Tzuyu's apology was forced or voluntary.

TWICE promoting TWICEcoaster: LANE 1 (2016)

On March 23rd, it was announced that TWICE was preparing for a new release and their comeback was planned to be by the end of April or early May. On March 31st, a picture of the members filming for their new MV was leaked online. Reps from the company addressed the leak, saying it was leaked without permission and that the group was, indeed, filming their new MV. The leak also stated that the release for their comeback would be on April 25th. This was confirmed on April 4th when their official SNS revealed a photo of the group dressed as cheerleaders, with the words "#CheerUp", which was to be their promotional track, and the date April 25, 2016. On April 12, the title of the mini-album, Page Two and tracklist were revealed.

The group held their comeback showcase the same day of the mini-album's release at the Yes24 Live Hall located in Seoul. The MV of the lead track hit 10 million views on YouTube within five daysThe group won their first music program award on May 5, 2016, on M! Countdown, and was soon followed by wins on Music Bank and Inkigayo.

On August 16, 2016, it was reported that Page Two had sold over 150,000 copies, making it the first girl group having a sales record of more than 100,000 units in 2016. "Cheer Up" stayed at #1 for four weeks on the Melon Top 100 chart, stayed in the TOP 10 for seventeen weeks, ranked #1 on the yearly chart in 2016, and stayed on the chart for a full year.

On September 23, 2016, TWICE released their two official colors, Apricot and Neon Magenta. Five days later, JYP Entertainment announced that the group was preparing for a late October comeback with a new mini-album and another title track by Black Eye Pilseung. On October 10th, the agency released a time table for their third mini-album, titled TWICEcoaster: LANE 1, through their official homepage and SNS, which showed their promotion schedule beginning October 10th until the release of their album on the 24th. The title track "TT" received a certified all-kill, earning the #1 spot on the Instiz real-time and daily iChart, and afterwards received a perfect all-kill, also placing #1 on the weekly chart. The mini-album sold 165,000 copies in a week and has been recorded as the best-selling album by a girl group in 2016.

The music video for "TT" reached over 6 million views a little over 24 hours after its release. The video went on to hit 10 million views in approximately 40.5 hours, making them the fastest K-Pop group to reach that number, pulling ahead only slightly from BTS who held the record at 41 hours. They then broke the records for the fastest time for a group to reach 20 million views, which they reached in 4 days and 18 hours, 30 million views, which they reached in about 9 days, 40 million views, and 50 million views. A little over four months later the MV reached 150 million views, setting the record for fastest time once again.

2017: TWICEcoaster: LANE 2

On February 16, 2017, TWICE released their first teaser for their new title track "KNOCK KNOCK", and released a second teaser a day later. On February 18th, the first teaser had hit over 2 million views, and their second teaser hit 1.5 million. The song "KNOCK KNOCK" placed #1 on eight real-time charts only a couple hours after its release, and achieved a certified All Kill on February 21st and another on February 23rd. The song also charted higher than the standard MelOn graph allows. Only days later, the song ranked within the top 10 in nine different countries' song charts, including in Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. It also ranked #8 on Billboard's YouTube Music chart for the week of March 4th.

The music video for the song hit 1 million views in just a few hours. It went on to score the record for highest views within 24 hours, reaching 9.8 million and just pulling ahead of Bangtan Boys' 9.4 million for "Bonmal" released the prior week. They held the record for only the day, however, because Bangtan Boys released the video for "Not Today" and reached 10.9 million views. The video went on to achieve the record for fastest MV to reach 30 million views, and did so in 6 days and 7 hours.
