ZOO was formed in 1989 with ten members as a dance unit. There first single, "Careless Dance", was released in 1991 with moderate success. The single featured vocals by future TRF member YU-KI, who left the group after the single was released.

The group released two more singles till they found much success with their fourth single, "Choo Choo TRAIN", that sold over a million copies. The group had moderate success after their hit single but broke up on Christmas Day 1995. After that, one member, HIRO, formed his own dance/pop group that was later named EXILE.
