Kitano Shoko made her debut in 1997 by appearing in her father's movie HANA-BI by using her stage name Matsuda Shoko. Kitano got this name as Matsuda was her mother's maiden name. However, at the same time as her debut, her parents decide to get a divorce and Kitano decided to abandon the stage name.

In 1998, Kitano made her singing debut under the label Avex Entertainment and being produced by X JAPAN's YOSHIKI. She debuted with the single "Begin" with her father supervising the music video. However, Kitano decided to suspense her career in 1999 in order to study abroad in America.

In 2004, Kitano married a chef after revealing she was already six months pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl in 2005. In the same year, Kitano resumed her show business career by starring in the movie Yuugengaisha Hikimodoshi as the lead actress.
