Biography

Koshijima was born in Kanazawa to a somewhat large family consisting of several siblings. She became interested in singing, being a self-professed fan of Hello! Project idol Matsuura Aya, and frequently went to karaoke as well as befriending people who were involved in making music. She also was involved in wind instruments club in high school, though the instrument she played was not disclosed.

In March of 1997, at the age of seventeen, Koshijima met Nakata Yasutaka at the Hokuriku TEENS' MUSIC FESTIVAL through a mutual friend group. She was not involved in any bands at the time and Nakata was interested in featuring a vocalist on his music, so he asked her to come over and record a few songs. By November of that same year, they formed the duo capsule. Koshijima has only ever contributed her vocals to the unit and has not been a featured singer on any other artist's work.

In 1998, Nakata began attending the Tokyo School of Music in Edogawa, while Koshijima remained in Kanazawa and worked. Nakata was initially not sure he would bring her over, having been signed to Yamaha by himself, but he needed a female vocalist so Yamaha would give him his own solo work and not relegate him to an in-house producer. Eventually both relocated to Tokyo and began working as capsule.

In the duo's early years, Koshijima was noticeably more involved in their music, penning lyrics to their songs Koi wo Shimashita and Orgel (from their debut single), Machibouke (from Tokyo Kissa), and Brownie (from music controller). In his 2015 interview for AERA magazine, Nakata revealed that Koshijima only wrote those lyrics by the request of their Yamaha management, and that it was not within her interests to be a lyricist, so this is the reason he has total control over the unit's music.
