Ohba got her start in 1970 when she successfully passed an audition for a theatre troupe located in Tokyo. She later debut on television four years later, making her first appearance on "Ai no Yamakawa". A year later, she won the special prize from the TV Tokyo television contest "Anata wo Star ni!", where she got a contract with the agency Bond Kikaku.

Ohba made her singing debut in 1977 by releasing her first single "Akogare". Her biggest hit came in 1979 when she released the single "Spring Samba". She later got popular at the end of the decade after appearing on the television program Comet-san. That same time, Ohba held a good-bye concert as her contract with Toshiba EMI was terminated. At the press conference, she stated that she ended her music contract because she thought she was tone deaf.

In 1984, she released her first nude photobook, entitled Ohba Kumiko. Then in 2000, Ohba married choreographer Takahashi but divorced five years later. She later told reporters that she divorced Takahashi because they lived different lives and that she suffers from a panic disorder.

In 2008, she celebrated her debut anniversary with a concert entitled "KUMIKO OHBA 35th Anniversary Live". A year later, Ohba gained the proper certifications to become a mental illness counselor at Heartful Life Counselor Institute.
