coo:ya

coo:ya (空夜, クウヤ) is an indie J-Pop duo under Saku Ya records.

Band Members

Information

coo:ya first formed in the late 1990's when a producer introduced the two to each other. After they met, they decided to form a duo out of fun and it ended up becoming a lasting project. They like to describe their work as "music [that] expresses the Yin and the Yang of human emotions, not limited to one genre or style."

The duo likes to focus on Miyo's vocals as an instrument and on the electronic/ambient sounds that Honda creates. They also take great pride in their effort to keep most of the songs "Japanese". Miyo hardly ever uses English words in her lyrics for she loves the sound of her native tongue.

As both Miyo and Kurage Honda have refused to play before a live audience, their music is quite difficult to track down.

In 2008, the lead vocalist, Miyo created the fun and unique band Tokyo Anastasia. In contrast to coo:ya's indie-band albums which create a spectrum of different human emotions and feelings, Miyo said with the inception of Tokyo Anastasia she wants to do "band" music. In this ensemble, Miyo wears various colorful outfits, including that of a classic Japanese oiran. Only Miyo is the static lead vocalist - Tokyo Anastasia features a revolving door of famous singers and musicians, ever changing its fun line-up.

Tokyo Anastasia has so far released nothing, only revealing a snippet of a song on their Facebook entitled "Fantasm" (ファンタスム). As it has been over five years since its creation and has so far had no releases, the future of this band remains in question.

On August 31, 2011, coo:ya released their first digital single, titled "Shounen no Hi".

On August 10, 2012, nearly a year after their last release, coo:ya released a new mini-album, the soundtrack for the anime Highschool Aurabuster Reunion-0, or "The Rebellion". Sometime later, the soundtrack was released to iTunes USA. It includes all three song tracks, "Crimson no Butterfly", "Silent Eyes" and "End of Silence", and does not contain the spoken tracks.

On 21 February 2014, coo:ya released an EP, titled "Shounen no Hi (Music Box)", also a digital single as was its predecessor of the same name. This EP contains no spoken tracks, and instead all four tracks are delicately transformed into beautiful music box "tinkles".

On 17 March 2015, coo:ya's first album, Jou En, became out of print. However, the digital album is still available on iTunes.

The band Tokyo Anastasia, coo:ya's side project, seems unclear. The only news available is that Atsuro (real name Daisuke Kato), formerly of the band Lucifer, briefly joined it. There have been no single or album releases.
