Kamikawa Takaya to star in “Stepfather Step” drama series

Actor Kamikawa Takaya (46) has been chosen to star in a new drama series titled “Stepfather Step,” based on the novel of the same name by popular author Miyabe Miyuki.

“Stepfather Step” is about a solitary thief who winds up becoming the “father” of two twins, and as a result, he is forced to give up his life of thievery. But the two children become involved in various troubles in their neighborhood, and the thief also faces suspicion from the twins’ teacher. The story combines mystery and domestic drama, centering on the relationship between the thief and the children.

In the original novel, the children are junior high students, but in the drama series they will be elementary school students played by child actors Shibuya Tatsuki and Shibuya Itsuki. Konishi Manami will play their teacher. Other cast members include Ito Shiro, Hirayama Aya, Sudo Risa, and Watanabe Ikkei.

“Stepfather Step” was first serialized in 1991-1992 in the magazine Shosetsu Gendai before being released as a collected volume in 1993. The novel has sold over 1 million copies total during its 20-year history.

The drama will take over the Monday 8:00pm time slot on TBS, after the historical series “Mitokomon” ends its run. The first episode will be a two-hour special on January 9, 2012.
