Arashi ranks #1 in albums for third consecutive year


Oricon has announced its sales rankings for 2011, and Arashi is at the top of both the album and music DVD charts. Their album “Beautiful World,” released in July, was #1 with 908,000 copies sold. The group has had the #1 album for three years in a row, the longest streak ever by a male artist.

Arashi is also the first male artist to rank #1 in the yearly album rankings for three consecutive years, surpassing Inoue Yosui’s record streak of two years (1974-1975). They are only the second artist ever to achieve a streak of three consecutive years, after Matsutoya Yumi did so from 1989 to 1991.

Arashi also became the first artist to have the #1 and #2 spots in the yearly music DVD rankings. Their “ARASHI 10-11 Tour “Scene” ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ Stadium,” released in January, sold 793,000 copies during the year, the highest sales figure ever since Oricon began doing annual music DVD rankings in 1999.

ARASHI 10-11 Tour “Scene” ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ Dome+,” released in June, was #2 with 673,000 copies sold. The group’s total DVD sales amounted to 10.17 billion yen, more than 4 times the amount achieved by AKB48, who were #2 with 2.46 billion yen in DVD sales.
