Fansubbing is the act of creating a free subtitle track for anime series, movies, etc. by fans, for fans. Many publishing companies see the online popularity as a genre and use it as a sort of free focus group to decide what to release in North America (most fansubs are those of unlicensed anime). With the advent of BitTorrent, free online fansubs have become much more widely available and more popular, not to mention easier to distribute. Gone were the days of manually capturing and editing anime, then recording to VHS and sending it out by mail for 5 USD or so, and in came the days of relatively simple subbing and free distribution.
