I.O.I promoting MISS ME? (2016)

I.O.I (아이오아이, also known as IOI) was a Korean pop 11-member project girl group that was formed via the Mnet TV show Produce 101. They were signed to CJ E&M Music's YMC Entertainment and promoted for one year.

Information

Produce 101, Pre-Debut

From January 22, 2016 to April 1, 2016 for a total of eleven episodes, 101 girls competed to debut in a project group of 11-members. On March 5th, Mnet posted to the Produce 101 website asking fans to choose a group name and concept. On March 31, 2016, the official name of the project group was announced to be I.O.I. Following the announcement, the name received some backlash for being too similar to the group AOA's name.

On April 1st, the final episode of Produce 101 aired, revealing those chosen as the final 11 to be in the group. These finalists were Jeon So Mi, Kim Se Jeong, Choi Yoo Jung, Kim Chung Ha, Kim So Hye, Zhou Jieqiong, Jung Chae Yeon, Kim Do Yeon, Kang Mi Na, Lim Na Young, and Yu Yeun Jung, who ranked #1 through #11 respectively. On April 3rd, it was revealed that the group would be debuting with a mini-album in May and that they would be promoting four songs, two as a full group and two in sub-units. The following day, on April 4th, their first MV teaser was released for their pre-release track "Crush", which was formerly previewed on the show and re-recorded with the final 11 girls. The full MV and digital single were released on April 5th. On April 6th it was announced that Na Young garnered the most votes among the girls to be the leader of the group. A sequel to Produce 101 called Standby IOI was announced on April 15th. The show, which began airing April 22nd, followed the girls as they prepared for their debut on May 4th.

Debut & First Sub-Unit

I.O.I released their debut mini-album, Chrysalis on May 4, 2016. They held their debut showcase and fan meeting on the following day at Jangchung Gymnasium.

On May 11th, Jung Chae Yeon returned to her agency and re-joined DIA for their comeback in June. On the 27th, it was revealed that the group would start promotions with sub-units and solo debuts of members in the summer, and would likely disband at the end of January 2017. It was announced on June 7th that Kim Se Jeong and Kang Mi Na had returned to their agency to prepare for their official debut as members of the girl group gugudan at the end of June.

On June 10, 2016, YMC Entertainment revealed Lim Na Young, Kim Chung Ha, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So Hye, Choi Yoo Jung, Kim Do Yeon and Jeon So Mi as members of the first unit. It was announced on July 10th that Yoo Yeon Jung had been added to the group Cosmic Girls and had returned to her agency to prepare for their comeback. On July 29th, it was announced that I.O.I would be dropping their new single on August 9th and that the unit group finished filming their music video on July 20th and was preparing for the release and promotions.

On August 2, 2016, a group image teaser was released through I.O.I's SNS with a caption "WXAXTX X XAN". Two days later, YMC Entertainment revealed the music video teaser for the group's new single "Whatta Man", which is inspired by Linda Lyndell's "What a Man". It was revealed that the choreography for the track was arranged by member Kim Chung Ha. Three teams were contacted to make the choreography for the song but Chung Ha's was chosen because it was deemed to be the highest quality. After selling out their initial batch of 30,000 units the day pre-orders went live, extra productions of the single were made. As of August 11th, pre-sale numbers reached approximately 55,000.

The group held a special live broadcast titled IOI's Comeback Countdown on August 8th for their unit single. Members shared what they'd been up to and behind the scenes from their single recording. In addition, the group performed their new single "Whatta Man" on broadcast for the first time. The single was released a day later on August 9th, and has gone on to win several awards on various TV music shows. The group appeared on Naver's 'V' app on August 19th and gave their thoughts on winning four times thus far.

On August 15, 2016, I.O.I released a full group digital single and remake of the Seoul 1988 Summer Olympics theme song "Hand in Hand" which was originally sung by Koreana. On the 31st the group released another digital single for the drama Darui Yeonin - Bobogyeongsim Ryeo.

Comeback

YMC Entertainment announced on August 30, 2016 that I.O.I is preparing for a comeback as a whole group in October, though the exact date had not yet been set.

On September 22nd, YMC Entertainment confirmed that I.O.I had begun recording for their new album as a full group slated for an October release, with a title track produced by Park Jin Young. It was also revealed that he would oversee the group's choreography, outfits, music video and photo shoot.

The new mini-album, titled miss me? is their last activity as a full group before their disbandment. It was released on October 17th. They held a special comeback show titled I Miss You Very Very Very Much Show that was aired live through Mnet on October 16th, and a showcase fat Yes24 Live Hall located in Seoul on October 17th. During the event, it was revealed that the group is planning to hold their final concert on January 21 and 22, 2017, though the details are still undecided. When the press asked about a possible reunion after disbandment, the members said they would want to reunite after five years.

Their title track "Neomu Neomu Neomu" received a certified all-kill followed by a perfect all-kill. They had their first music show win for the song on Show Champion on October 26th. The music video has hit over 10 million views.

Final Song & Farewell Concert

The group's final song "Sonagi" was released online on January 18, 2017. The song was written by SEVENTEEN member Woozi and several others. The MV for the song is a montage of different videos of the group over the past year, including clips of the girls from their time on Produce 101.

I.O.I held their farewell concert Time Slip - I.O.I from January 20-22, 2017 at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul.

They filmed a CF for school uniform brand Elite as their last schedule as a group on January 25.

Reunion

On July 1, 2019, it was announced by Studio Blu that the group will have a reunion in October. The group will reunite without members Somi and Yeonjung.
