Pre-Debut

Starship Entertainment trainees Ahn Yujin and Jang Wonyoung had previously appeared on the idol group survival show Produce 48 during the summer of 2018. Wonyoung placed first on the show and Yujin placed fifth. Both became members of the show's project group IZ*ONE from its debut in 2018 until its conclusion in April 2021. After the group's disbandment, both girls went back to Starship.

Debut

IVE was officially announced on November 2, 2021 with the release of a profile picture for first member Yujin. Profile pictures of members Gaeul, Wonyoung, Liz, Rei, and Leeseo followed. The group debuted on December 1, 2021 with their single "ELEVEN". Shortly afterward, the group entered the worldwide iTunes song chart with title track "ELEVEN" at #22. The track then also entered the top 10 of various iTunes song charts across the globe. Meanwhile, the side track of the single album "Take It" entered the iTunes Poland chart at #18 and the iTunes Thailand at #31. "ELEVEN"'s music video hit over 10 million views on YouTube just a day after its release, and became the fastest music video by a K-Pop group debuted that year to hit that mark.

On December 8th's Show Champion, IVE took home their first music show win with "ELEVEN." Taking home the win in just seven days, IVE became the fastest girl group to ever achieve their first music show win after debuting, breaking ITZY's previous record of nine days. Not only that, according to Hanteo Chart, their debut single sold a total of 152,229 copies in its first week, making it the greatest number of first week sales a K-pop girl group has ever achieved. With this, IVE was ranked in the top 3 for physical album sales on Gaon during the first week of December.

During the week of December 13th, IVE appeared on Billboard's Hot Trending Songs chart for the first time at #4. They are the fifth South Korean girl group to land on the chart, behind bit hitting groups TWICE, BLACKPINK, aespa, and ITZY. "ELEVEN" is also tied with TWICE's "SCIENTIST" for the highest ranking song among the aforementioned groups at the time.

On December 27th, their music video surpassed over 50 million views on YouTube, 26 days after release, making them the first 2021 rookie group to hit the milestone. It is the most-viewed 2021 debut music video by a K-Pop group, and the eighth music video released in 2021 by a fourth-generation K-Pop girl group with the most views on YouTube.

On January 22, 2022, IVE won their fourth 1st place award on MBC's Show! Music Core making them one of only four artists to win the quadruple crown on the show in the past decade.
