Josei (女性) literally means "female" in Japanese. The term is often used to refer to a type of Japanese manga and anime, aimed at a older female audience over 18. Subject matter in josei comics have a wide variety ranging from the romance to comedy and even to hentai.
Popular josei manga and anime include Honey and Clover, NANA, and Nodame Cantabile.
