History

OCHA NORMA began when Hello! Project and Morning Musume leader Fukumura Mizuki made a surprise appearance at the Hello! Project Kenshuusei Happyoukai 2021 3gatsu ~Yell~ on March 7, 2021, to announce that a new group would be formed by the end of 2021 and the current Hello Pro Kenshuusei Unit lineup; Yonemura Kirara, Ishiguri Kanami, Kubota Nanami, and Saito Madoka, would be the first confirmed members with more to be added. Four new members from the Hello Pro Kenshuusei were announced through the weekly TV Tokyo show "Hello Dream." on July 5th; Nakayama Natsume, Hiromoto Ruli, Nishizaki Miku, and Kitahara Momo. The Hello! Project Shin Member Audition 2021 was also announced, seeking members for ANGERME, the new group, and the Hello Pro Kenshuusei.

The new group continued activities as the Hello Pro Kenshuusei Unit until December 12th when the name OCHA NORMA was revealed by former Juice=Juice member Miyamoto Karin at the Hello! Project Kenshuusei Happyoukai 2021 12gatsu ~RING~, along with two new members from the audition; Tsutsui Roko and Tashiro Sumire.

The name was created by playing on the word "ocha no ma" (お茶の間), meaning living room (or the tea room that serves as a living room where everyone gathers in traditional homes), combined with the Latin word "norma" meaning standard or normal, with the aim of becoming the standard of a new generation to entertain audiences from their living rooms. The group would begin performing together on January 2, 2022 during the Hello! Project 2022 Winter ~LOVE & PEACE~ concert tour.

The group's major debut single was announced on March 13, 2022 during the Hello! Project Kenshuusei Happyoukai 2022 3gatsu BREATH ~Ibuki~, with a release date of July 13th. The following month on April 9th at the OCHA NORMA FC Event 2022 ~OCHA NORMA no Ma 2~ members Saito Madoka and Hiromoto Ruli were revealed to be leader and sub-leader respectively.
