Quruli (くるり) is an alternative Japanese rock band from Kyoto that formed in 1996. They are signed to SPEEDSTAR RECORDS and managed by Bad News Records, subsidiaries of Victor Entertainment Inc.. Since late 2006, the band has been a two piece unit, using various support musicians. They are influenced by and use many styles of music, such as: rock, grunge, jazz, blues, and some techno and house. Quruli have their own indies label called NOISE McCARTNEY RECORDS where they are the executive producer.

Information

After Kishida Shiegru (vocals/guitar), Satou Masashi (bass), and Mori Nobuyuki (drums) met in 1996 during Rock Commune (Ritsumeikan University Music Club), the schoolmates formed Quruli. The band's name itself, written in hiragana (くるり), means turn, flip, and/or transform. They got the idea for the name from a sign in Kyoto's subway. Quruli went to write songs and record right away, releasing a demo album on cassette tape called Quruli no Ichikaiten in February of 1996.

Another demo, the two track double A-side single "Cyanosis / Baseball Game", was released in cassette tape format on August 30th, 1997. The first A-side, "Cyanosis", would be re-recorded later for their second major and fourth overall album Zukan. During this time Quruli recorded six more tracks in their home studio, and had also signed with indies label Bad News Records. Those previously recorded tracks would become their first album, Moshi Moshi, released on November 21st, 1997.

Their second album Fandelier was released on May 15th, 1998. Quruli then signed with major label SPEED STAR RECORDS, a sub-label of Victor Entertainment Inc., sometime after their album release in 1998. The band would still be managed by Bad News Records. Their major debut single "Tokyo" was released on October 21st, 1998. This was followed with the release of their second single "Niji" on February 24th, 1999 and major debut album Sayonara Stranger on April 21st, 1999.

• Horie Hirohisa - Keyboards, Guitar

Live support for the "Borofesta '06" event on October 9th at Kyoto-shi Sakyou-ku Seibu Koudou·Seibu Koudou Maehiroba. Recording support on "BIRTHDAY", "Superstar", "Juice", and NIKKI. Hirohisa along with Quruli, Cocco, and Dai Tarou, formed the band SINGER SONGER in 2004.

• THE SUSPENDERS - Background Vocals

Fuchigami Yoshito (Tenor), Endou Yumi (Soprano), and Okazaki Masayuki (Baritone & Accordion) make up the choir. Three of them participated in the Quruli Fureai Concert Final on December 11th and 12th, 2007 at Kanagawa PACIFICO YOKOHAMA Kokuritsudai Hall. While only two of them participated in the "COUNTDOWN JAPAN 07/08" event on December 29th at Makuhari Messe, and the "COUNTDOWN JAPAN 07/08 WEST" event on December 31st at Intex Osaka.
