Tofu Records

Tofu Records is a US-based firm that releases music from Japanese artists under Sony. The company is based in Santa Monica, California, and opened in 2003. The first artist signed under Tofu was T.M. Revolution, later followed by L'Arc~en~Ciel.

Tofu Records has a target audience of people interested in anime, and hence tries to sign artists who release a lot of anime theme songs (for example, HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR as they sang theme songs for both BLEACH Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY).

One major aspect of Tofu records is getting artists to perform concerts, mostly at anime conventions.

Every so often, Tofu Records releases a compilation CD of songs that are currently popular by Sony music artists. They either go under the name Japan For Sale or JPOP CD. JPOP CDs generally focus on anime theme songs, while Japan For Sale is more general and tries to deliver a range of music styles. The artists featured on these CDs are chosen from Sony's entire repertoire instead of the standard artists that Tofu usually promote. The first 'Japan For Sale' CD was originally a promotion CD that was given away for free.

Until their site relaunch in 2007, the Tofu Records website featured a Japanese music forum. Since the relaunch, Tofu Records has been more or less defunct.
