Yaoi is used to describe titles that contain largely sex scenes and other sexually explicit themes, whereas shounen-ai is used to describe titles that focus more on romance. Most shounen-ai do not contain sex scenes or very little. Most shounen-ai contains harem themes, whereas most yaoi does not.
