Yaoi (やおい) and Shonen-ai (少年愛; Young Love) are a genre of manga and anime in Japan. The terms focus on love and romance between boys or men. Yaoi is used to describe titles that contain largely sex scenes and other sexually explicit themes, whereas shonen-ai is used to describe titles that focus more on romance. Most shonen-ai do not contain sex scenes or very little. Most shonen-ai contains harem themes, whereas most yaoi does not.

Popular yaoi manga and anime include Junjou Romantica, Papa to Kiss in the Dark, and Ai no Kusabi.

Popular shonen-ai manga and anime include Loveless, Gravitation, and Gakuen Heaven.
