A is Hamasaki Ayumi's tenth single under the avex trax label. All tracks were written by D.A.I and arranged by D.A.I and Naoto Suzuki. "monochrome" and "Trauma" were used in JT Momo no Tennensui commercials. "too late" was used in commercials for Honda's Giorno Crea line of motor scooters, and "End roll (HAL's Mix)" was used in commercials for Morinaga's Kongari chocolates.

The single was initially released in one regular-press color variant (black) and four limited-edition color variants (blue, pink, orange, and green). When the single hit a million copies, a gold color variant was released. When the single reached 1.5 million copies sold, a real gold disc with a gold-colored cover image was release to commemorate it.

Ayu had this to say about the inspiration behind the songs:

The single reached #1 on the Oricon charts, attaining that position for a total of three weeks (one, and then two more in a row after skipping a week), and spent a total of eighteen weeks on the charts. During its first week the single sold 508,940 copies, and has since sold a total of 1,630,540 copies, making this Ayumi's highest selling single to date (as of April 2009).
