BONITA was formed after an audition to form the next idol group for the television variety show Ninkimono de Ikou! in 2000, which resulted in Sonoda, Egawa, Asami, and Yasuda winning the audition. They debuted later in 2001 with the single "ONLY YOU" released in South Korea. Their next single, "Romance", was released in Japan the month after as a re-written "Only You" with changed lyrics.
