Information
Produce 101, Pre-Debut
From January 22, 2016 to April 1, 2016 for a total of eleven episodes, 101 girls competed to debut in a project group of 11-members. On March 5th, Mnet posted to the Produce 101 website asking fans to choose a group name and concept. On March 31, 2016, the official name of the project group was announced to be I.O.I. Following the announcement, the name received some backlash for being too similar to the group AOA's name.
On April 1st, the final episode of Produce 101 aired, revealing those chosen as the final 11 to be in the group. These finalists were Jeon So Mi, Kim Se Jeong, Choi Yoo Jung, Kim Chung Ha, Kim So Hye, Zhou Jieqiong, Jung Chae Yeon, Kim Do Yeon, Kang Mi Na, Lim Na Young, and Yu Yeun Jung, who ranked #1 through #11 respectively. On April 3rd, it was revealed that the group would be debuting with a mini-album in May and that they would be promoting four songs, two as a full group and two in sub-units. The following day, on April 4th, their first MV teaser was released for their pre-release track "Crush", which was formerly previewed on the show and re-recorded with the final 11 girls. The full MV and digital single were released on April 5th. On April 6th it was announced that Na Young garnered the most votes among the girls to be the leader of the group. A sequel to Produce 101 called Standby IOI was announced on April 15th. The show, which began airing April 22nd, followed the girls as they prepared for their debut on May 4th.
Debut
I.O.I released their debut mini-album, Chrysalis on May 4, 2016. They held their debut showcase and fan meeting on the following day at Jangchung Gymnasium.
