After seeing [[SPEED]] performing on television, MAI wished to become a singer in the future. She entered an RKC-TV competition in 1998 and won their special jury prize. She became a member of the indies dance unit "MOMO" after this. They had their own television program, "Momo-Can do!" in 2001, and the unit "MYTHRIL" was also formed. (MAI left MYTHRIL in 2003). She began doing local performances in Fukuoka, but became bored and moved to Tokyo, where she also held performances.

During this time she improved her vocal and dancing skills while in Seoul. She made her Korean-language debut in August 2004, releasing [[Away (Mai)|AWAY]] in South Korea. It stayed at #1 for two weeks on Internet sales websites in the foreign section. Just one week after its release, she had a live concert at the Yokohama High School Music Festival.
