A vinyl record is an analog recording, usually of music, recorded onto an oil-based disc (often called a phonograph record, a vinyl, a record, or referred to by their size or speed). Vinyl records are separated into three different types of releases:

  • Album: LP, 10", and 12"
  • Mini-Album: EP
  • Single: 7" and 12"

Speeds

Records are also played at various speeds, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Most often they are one of the following:

  • 78 RPM
  • 33 1/3 RPM
  • 45 RPM
