Jung So Min was born Kim Yoon Ji on March 16, 1989. She began learning ballet in elementary school and continued her education in the dance until she quit in middle school because her parents were against it. Kim continued her education in dance by learning traditional Korean dance and, after graduating from high school, enrolled at the Korea National University of Arts with a major in acting. In 2008, using the stage name "Jung So Min" which she personally picked out, Kim made her television debut on Star Golden Bell's "Golden Bell Challenge". In 2009 Kim began appearing in promotional ads for SK Telecom and in 2010 made her acting debut in the drama Nappeun Namja while in University. Viewers of the drama stated that Kim's facial features and voice were similar to actress Yoon Eun Hye, for which she later issued an apology to Yoon stating she was sorry that Yoon was discussed in that manner against her intentions. In early July it was announced that Kim had been cast as the female lead, opposite of Kim Hyun Joong, in the drama series Jangnanseureon Kiss.
