YUKI's first appearance in the music scene was in 1993 as the lead singer and lyricist of JUDY AND MARY. YUKI and Onda Yoshihito had formed the group in 1992 after meeting on a film set. JUDY AND MARY enjoyed huge success in the 90's, releasing seven albums, twenty-two singles and embarking on several national stadium tours throughout their 10-year career. During a JUDY AND MARY hiatus in 1999, YUKI joined the short-lived supergroup NiNa, singing alongside Kate Pierson of the B=52's and released two singles and one album with the group, all of which were well-received. Also during the hiatus, in November of 1999, YUKI collaborated with singer and friend Chara on her single, "Ai no Hi 3tsu Orange" which sold well over 200,000 copies and reached number six on the Oricon charts. JUDY AND MARY resumed activities in 2000, but by 2001 the band had completed their final tour and disbanded. Following JAM's break-up, YUKI joined the experimental all-girl rock band Mean Machine as back-up vocalist, lyricist and one of two drummers. The group released two singles and one album. In 2002 she debuted as a solo artist with "the end of shite" and has been enjoying a successful solo career ever since. As a solo artist, YUKI has released five albums, twenty singles, six DVDs and six biographical books. Her achievements include three #1 albums and sixteen Top 10 singles.

Aside from music, YUKI is involved in fashion, photography, radio, and writing. During the 90s, YUKI was a popular radio personality, hosting "All Night Nippon" (オールナイトニッポン) from 1994-1996. During the height of JUDY AND MARY's popularity YUKI contributed a monthly illustrated journal page for the magazine WHAT's IN?, titled "YUKI no Hateshinai Tawagoto" ("YUKIの果てしない戯言"; "YUKI's Endless Nonsense"). Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, YUKI created dozens of pages for WHAT's IN? and those pages were later compiled and published in her three autobiographies, "Girly Swing", "Girly Boogie", and "Girly Tree". YUKI still occasionally creates these pages for her official fan club newsletters and certain special occasions. Finally, YUKI is also a member of the photography group Sleep with stylists/artists Omori Youko and Hirano Fumiko. Along with photography collections, they also produce limited-edition clothing and often participate in the art direction of YUKI's music releases.

Throughout her career YUKI has collaborated with many artists, including such musicians as: GLAY, HALCALI, Suneohair, Caravan, GING NANG BOYZ, Chara, Andy Sturmer, Sukima Switch, K, members of TOKYO SKA PARADISE ORCHESTRA and NONA REEVES, and Higurashi Aiha of Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her. The song "Sayonara Dance" features music by Carole King and the song "Birthday" features music by KT Tunstall.

YUKI is one of Japan's most recognized vocalists, known for her unique voice, popular fashion style and energetic live performances. Her musical style has changed significantly over the course of her career. During the early 90s, she and JUDY AND MARY played punk, with evident influence from bands like The Ramones, REBECCA, and The Sex Pistols. By the end of the 1990's the band's musical style had developed from punk, to pop-punk, into experimental pop-rock. Side projects NiNa and Mean Machine, as well as her first solo album, PRISMIC, showcased a more 'classic' rock sound. Her second album, commune, experimented with a retro, acoustic sound. Her third album, joy, marked a drastic shift in her style to pop.

YUKI is also known for her eclectic music videos. Her debut video, "the end of shite" was contriverstial due to it's provocative and sexual imagery. Some of her best-known are the triad of videos directed by the late Nagi Noda. These videos were "Stand Up! Sister", "Sentimental Journey", and "Hummingbird" - "Sentimental Journey" was so popular it landed Noda a job with Coca Cola directing international commericials. The video for "Home Sweet Home" won the "Best Shooting Award" in 2004, and in 2005 YUKI won "Best Video of the Year" for "JOY" (directed by Takeshi Nakamura). Hirano Fumiko has directed 7 of YUKI's music videos, from "Yorokobi no Tane" to "COSMIC BOX", and "Rendezvous" is nominated for the "Best Shooting Award" in 2009. YUKI's most recent video, "Ureshikutte Dakiau yo" was directed by Isshin Inudo, director of movies "Touch" and "Gu Gu Neko Datte aru."

Like Chara, Shiina Ringo, and other female Japanese musicians, YUKI is often compared to Icelandic musician Bjork. Her voice is very distinctive due to it's high pitch and nasality; however, her voice is powerful and she is noted for having wide range and excellent pitch. Though primarily a singer and lyricist, YUKI can also play guitar, drums, tenor sax, piano, pianica, and harmonica. She wrote or co-wrote the majority of the lyrics for JUDY AND MARY and continues to write her own lyrics as a solo artist, with very few exceptions. Her lyrics are often considered strange or abstract; they generally focus on the theme of love. YUKI is also a composer, having composed several of her songs, including the single "66db" and several other tracks on "PRISMIC."

Personal Life

In September 2000, YUKI married Magokoro Brothers frontman, YO-KING. She gave birth to their first son on April 18, 2003, however the child died from unknown causes on March 17, 2005. YUKI gave birth to her second son on August 29, 2006. In February 2009 it was announced via her official homepage that YUKI was due to give birth to her third child in June. It was reported by Eltha that she gave birth to her third son on May 31st, 2009.[1]

YUKI and YO-KING have written one known song together, "Densetsu no Futari" on HALCALI's album Ongaku no Susume.

Recent Activity

Following the release of "Rendezvous" YUKI took a long break, during which she gave birth to her third child. She returned in November 2009 with the release of her 19th single, "COSMIC BOX." On February 12th, YUKI performed "Ureshikutte Dakiau yo" on Music Station's 1000th episode special; it was her first television performance in 5 years. Five days after the performance, YUKI's 20th single, "Ureshikutte Dakiau yo," was officially released. The single has reached #5 on the Oricon charts and #2 on 81.3 FM J-WAVE, a Tokyo radio station. On March 10th 2010, YUKI will release her 5th original album, Ureshikutte Dakiau yo. A tour in support of the album will begin in July 2010.

Trivia

  • Before forming JUDY AND MARY, YUKI had worked as a tour guide and a beautician.
  • GLAY is from the same home town as YUKI (Hakodate), and she and the band have been acquaintances since the late 1980s. YUKI has also occasionally appeared on GLAY albums.
  • YUKI cites 1980s band REBECCA as a huge source of inspiration. (As she said: "私の音楽はここから始まった"; "the place where my music began".)
  • Since first breaking into the top 40 with the release of JUDY AND MARY's 1994 single, "Hello! Orange Sunshine", not one of YUKI's albums or singles (including side projects Mean Machine and NiNa) has dropped below #38 on the Oricon charts. Only three singles have charted at #30 or below, and only six of all albums and singles have charted below #20.
  • YUKI has had over fifty top 20 releases (albums and singles) since August 1994.
