THE BEST OF BIGBANG is BIGBANG's third Japanese best album and their final release under Universal Music, which contains songs from both their Korean and Japanese discographies. It was released in three versions, two limited editions including two CDs a DVD and one of them also including a T-shirt, and a regular edition including only the first CD "Japanese Best". The album was first scheduled to be released in late November however it was pushed back after G-Dragon's marijuana scandal in early October. The album was re-announced two days after the group won the "Best Worldwide Act" award at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards.

The album is certified Gold for shipment of 100,000 copies.
