Yura Yura Teikoku formed in 1989 as a four piece band led by guitarist/vocalist Shintaro Sakamoto. After several membership changes, bassist Chiyo Kamekawa joined the band. A couple of years later in 1992, they lost their second guitaris and drummer. After a succession of drummers, Ichiro Shibata joined the band in 1997 and the band lineup has remained constant since then. After playing around Japan for 16 years and becoming a highly respected and influential band, Yura Yura Teikoku finally played their first overseas shows, performing to two packed houses in New York City in October 2006.
