Information
SALLY officially formed in 1981 at a culture festival at the band's former high school, Housei High School. They started to perform at various live houses in 1982 after graduating from high school. They auditioned the following year in a contest sponsored by CBS Sony Records in Tokyo. But, they didn't get to the final round. They later entered in a rock contest many months after the CBS Sony Records' one but failed to go to the final round. However, saxophonist Asaya Sanji won the contest's Best Performance Player Award.
Even though SALLY failed the rock contest, folk singer Yamada Panda took interest in them after seeing their performance at the rock contest. In December 1983, Yamada and Japan Phonogram producer Igishi Yoshinori went to one of their lives and offered them a record deal.
SALLY released their first single, entitled "Virgin Blue", on July 1984 with the now defunct Flips Record. The title song was used as a theme for Kirin Lemon 2101. At first, "Hashi no Maria" was planned as the band's debut single. However, composer Suzuki Kisaburo thought that "Virgin Blue"'s hook was better suited for the Kirin Lemon 2101's CM then "Hashi no Maria"'s. "Hashi no Maria" was later released as the band's third single.
After their debut, the press started to call them the "Second The Checkers" as SALLY's clothing, hairstyles, their tunes, and etc resembled like The Checkers. The band released in total six singles, four studio albums, and one best album before they broke up on May 27, 1986. After SALLY's breakup, the members went onto do other projects.
