Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon by Takeuchi Naoko

Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon (美少女戦士セーラームーン; Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) is a magical girl shojo manga and anime series created by Takeuchi Naoko. It is partially based off a previous manga of Takeuchi's called Code Name wa Sailor V, which ran for three volumes from 1991 to 1992. When asked to make a mahou shoujo anime, Takeuchi scrapped ideas from Sailor V and ended up with Sailor Moon which started in March of 1992.

The anime and manga both started in 1992 and ended in 1997. The anime was directed by Ikuhara Kunihiko, Matano Hiromachi, Sato Junichi, with character designs by Ito Ikuko. It ended with a total of 200 episodes (divided up into five seasons), three movies, and three tv specials. The manga ended shortly before the anime did, with 18 tankouban. To this date, Sailor Moon has been published many countries all over the world and continues to be Takeuchi's best selling work. Its success has lead to mutiple albums, character singles, video games, musicals (known as Seramyu) and a live action show in 2003 entitled Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

Synopsis

Sailor Moon is about a 14 year old teenager named Tsukino Usagi who is secretly the soldier of the moon, Sailor Moon and the reincarnation of Princess Serenity. Thanks to talking cat Luna, Tsukino gets powers to fight the enemy that destroyed her kingdom on the moon long ago. Along the way she meets other soldiers like her that have also been reincarnated. The anime and manga were divided up into five seasons:

Seasons/Arcs

Sailor Moon

This is the first part of Sailor Moon. The first five inner senshi (Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus being the others) are found and introduced and they go up against Queen Beryl and the Dark Kingdom to save the Earth. The anime spanned 46 episodes starting in March of 1992 and ending in February of 1993. the manga was 3 volumes, 1-3.

Sailor Moon R

This is the second part of Sailor Moon. In the anime there are two parts to it, a small 13 episode filler where the five senshi regain their memories and go up against two aliens, Ali and En and their tree Makaiju. The second part of the anime (and the only part of the manga) deals with Prince Demand and the Black Moon. This season introduces Chibiusa and Sailor Pluto. The anime spanned for 42 episodes from March of 1993 to February of 1994. the manga was 3 volumes, 4-6.

Sailor Moon S

This is the third part of Sailor Moon. In the manga its referred to the Infinity Arch. This season dealt with the introduction and reapparences of Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto, Sailor Saturn and the conflict between the two groups of senshi. The anime spanned 39 episodes between March of 1994 and February of 1995. The manga spanned 4 volumes, vol. 7-10.

Sailor Moon Super S

This is the fourth part of Sailor Moon. This is probably where the manga and anime differed so much. While both anime and manga dealt with Queen Nehellenia and the Dead Moon, important characters such as the outer senshi were missing in the anime. The anime spanned 38 episodes from March of 1995 to March of 1996.

Sailor Stars

This is the fifth and last part of Sailor Moon. In the anime, it was split up into two parts. The first part of the Stars season dealt with Queen Nehellenia being revived and the reappearnce of the Outer Senshi. The second part of the season and the entire fifth arc of the manga dealt with Sailor Galaxia and the Sailor Animates. This part also dealt with the concept of soldiers throughout the entire galaxy and the introduction of the Sailor Starlights. the anime spanned for 33 episodes, being Sailor Moon's shortest season. The manga spanned for 3 volumes, 16-18.
