Ten years later, she auditioned for the television anime Pants no Ana 2 ~Kahei Hatake de Input~ but didn't win a spot on the anime. But, Shimada didn't give up and auditioned from MOMOCO a year later and won. Shimada first debuted as an actress after winning the award in the dorama Obacchama ni wa Wakarumai. She made her singing debut in 1987 with the single "Glass no Gensoukyoku" under the name Shimada Nami with the label Columbia Records. She didn't break the charts until her third single, "Free Balloon", became a hit.
In 1990, she retired from the idol business and later became a radio personality and a DJ two years later. In 2007, Shimada would write and host her own online radio show about the Soul Music and Jazz genres.
