Shimazu Aya got her start for her music career when she started to study under the supervision of lyricist Hoshino Tetsurou at age 14. She soon got her chance and debuted with the single Hakama wo Haita Wataridori in 1986. Her biggest hit came on May 1991 with the single Aizome Katsura wo Mou Ichido, selling over three million copies. A decade later, she made her first appearance on the end of the program Kouhaku Utagassen, singing the song Kanshajou ~Haha e no Message~.

She started to appear as a radio personality in 1995 with her own radio show, Utau Headlight.
