Iwai Sayuri entered the world of show business at a young age when she was scouted after appearing on the television singing competition NHK Nodo Jiman. At 10 years old, she debuted as an actress in the movie Glass no Usagi. She then became a mascot girl five years later for the rock band Yokahama Ginbae. At the same time, she made her idol singer debut with the single "Dream Dream Dream". She held events for the single at the Sunshine City in Tokyo among 1,000 fans.

During her music career, Iwai gain popularity and her ponytail hair style was made as her trademark among fans. But two years later, Iwai would cut her trademark and move onto a hairstyle of short, wavy hair. But, it didn't stop her as she starred in her first musical in 1987, entitled Shoukou Sailor. Soon after, she would become a talk and variety reporter and for a while, a pachinko idol.

Iwai celebrated her twenty year anniversary by releasing a piano album, LOVE LETTER, and performed a live concert at DOORS. There, she announced that she would take a pause from her music career and study abroad in Houston to study music. She also got married in September 2003 and gave birth to couple's daughter in 2004 and male twins in 2007.

In May 2008, she returned to Japan.
