Born on June 26 1984 Ginowan, Okinawa Prefecture, Emi was involved with a brass band at a young age. In the year 2005 she went to Canada for language studies. It was there when she truly fell in love with music, especially Jazz music. When she came home from Canada in the year 2006 she began studying Jazz music. In April 2007 she participated in a music audition and won the MSN Special Jury Prize. She then was signed a contract with the Nancle Label and so released her first limited single ''[[Negai no Sora]]'' on May 15, 2007 under a stage name タワタエミ (TAWATA EMI). The single reached #1 on the Indies charts.
