Jounouchi Sanae began to be involved in music when she learned to play the shamisen as a child. In middle school, Jounouchi participated in TV Tokyo's Zennihon Enka Senshuken Ouboshita contest. However, she didn't get a break into the music business until she won an audition on the show Yuuyake Nyan Nyan and joined Onyanko Club in 1985.

A year after joining Onyanko Club, she released her first solo single, "Ajisaibashi", in 1986. The single broke the record to be the first enka single to reach #1 on the weekly Oricon charts. After the breakup of Onyanko Club, she became a popular personality on many of the radio stations and actress in the early 90s.

In 2004, she married Fuji Television planning manager and Yuuyake Nyan Nyan director Kimura Tadahiro. Four years later, she changed labels and switched to Universal Music. However, her tenure at Universal didn't last long as she changed labels in 2010 to Teichiku Entertainment.
