In 1983, Sonoko first auditioned for the CBS Record audition Teens Pop Contest but didn't pass. Two years later, she auditioned for Onyanko Club on their television show Yuuyake NyanNyan and passed it with a score of 140. She went on to appear in television shows like Sukeban Deka and also began her solo career with the single Namida no Jasmine Love, which shot up to #1 on the Oricon charts.
Due to her being very popularity in Onyanko Club, she graduated on March 1986 to pursue a solo career. She still appeared on Yuuyake Nyan Nyan and released a Christmas album with other members in 1986 but she began to take control over her solo career and started to produce her own albums. She also later on started to write her own songs, starting with her 1990 album Replica.
She is married to composer Goto Tsugutoshi, who wrote all the songs for her fourth album Rouge et Bleu in 1994. She also announced that she would retire from the music business.
