The anime is adapted from the Suzumiya Haruhi light novel series with characters designed by Ito Noizi. It was first created as a 14 episode anime in 2006 and then remade to a 28 episode series in 2009.

The anime was also made into two special web animes, Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu (涼宮ハルヒちゃんの憂鬱; The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan) and Nyoro~n Churuya-san (にょろーん☆ちゅるやさん), six video games across different platforms, three trading card games, and a feature film.

Synopsis

On the first day of high school a beautiful girl, Suzumiya Haruhi, introduced herself and said that she isn't interested in ordinary humans; she prefers espers, times travelers and aliens. She later befriends Kyon, a normal boy in a same class. One day Suzumiya decided to make a club, the SOS-Dan (SOS団; SOS Brigade). She recruited: Nagato Yuki, the only member of the literature club, Asahina Mikuru, a popular second year student, and Koizumi Itsuki, a "mysterious transfer student". Then the club members in turn revealed to Kyon that they are alien, time traveler, and esper...

The music for Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is composed by Kosaki Satoru and produced by the company Lantis. Due to the popularity of the anime series, tied singles and albums had good performances on the Oricon charts, especially the singles "Hare Hare Yukai" and "Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsumeawase".
