Janne Da Arc (ジャンヌダルク) spent ten years as an indie band before signing with the avex trax sub-label cutting edge in 1999, becoming the first visual-kei group to be adopted by the company. Charachterized by fast-paced, upbeat rock and the added element of a keyboard player, Janne Da Arc has become a major player in the Japanese rock industry.

yasu is the leader as well as one of the founders of Janne Da Arc. Voice lessons at a young age stimulated his love for music and boosted his desire to form his own band. Besides rock, yasu has an appreciation for pop music, as well as traditional Japanese music. He also enjoys anime, manga, video games, panchinko and smoking, although it is suspected that he has, or has tried to, quit. He does not sleep very well, only getting 5-6 hours of rest at night. yasu deeply admires and respects hyde, vocalist of the Japanese rock band L'Arc~en~Ciel.

Shuji was the last member to join Janne Da Arc. Shuji's perferred style of rock metal and heavy metal, a taste that he developed at a young age. Even today, he continues to be a fan of X-Japan. Shuji is one of the shy members of the band, however, he is able to joke around and have fun with the others.

Kiyo is the shiest member of Janne Da Arc. Kiyo's skills on the keyboard are rarely found in Japanese rock bands, and therefore his presence adds an extra dimension to the group. He is very talented, sometimes appearing in shows surrounded by five different keyboards.

Ka-yu is one of the more extroverted members of Janne Da Arc. Although he is one of the original founders of the band, Ka-yu left the group for three years for unknown reasons before returning in 1992. He has several tattoos, earings and piercings on his body.

you joined the band in 1991, two years after its creation, and is one of the quieter members of the band. He enjoys listening to music, buying CDs and is a fan of Metallica.


Biography

Osaka 1989. At the age of 14, Yasu and Ka-yu, who went to school together, decide to form a band. The two recruit Kiyo and Chiba. The formation is Yasu on vocals, Ka-yu on bass, Chiba on drums and Kiyo on keyboard. For unknown reasons, Ka-yu then leaves the band and is replaced by Ino. In 1990, the band is given the name Okyan Teiisu.

In 1991, you joins the group as the new guitarist. The name Janne Da Arc is now adopted, inspired by a charachter from the manga Violence Jack, created by Go Nagai.

Chiba leaves the group for several months in 1992, and Shuji becomes the backup drummer for the band until Chiba returns. In that same year, Ka-yu returns, and the group begins their time as an indies band in the Japanese rock scene, recording their first demo tape in November. Two more demo tapes follow in 1993 and 1994. In 1995, Chiba leaves the band for good and Shuji becomes the permanent drummer.

In 1997, their first mini-album Resist is recorded. 1998 brings Dearly, their second mini album and a re-recorded version of Resist with new songs.

Their third mini-album CHAOS MODE is released in 1999. This year marks a turning point in the history of Janne Da Arc. The band is finally signed to a major label, Avex Trax, and their debut single as a major group, RED ZONE is released. The band embarks upon their first tour as a najor group, called CHAOS ZONE. 2000 brings their first major album, D.N.A..

Since 2000, Janne Da Arc has released six new albums, along with two singles collections, and several hit singles such as EDEN ~kimi ga inai and Gekkouka. Their latest single Furimukeba.../Destination debuted at #2 on the Oricon weelky charts, selling over 77,000 copies. A new double A-side is due out May 10, 2006.
