Kawabe began her career at the age of 12 with the Theatre Academy talent agency. In 2001 she was cast as Mizuno Ami in the Sera Myu stage musicals, and in 2002 she became a model for the junior fashion magazine Love Berry. She soon became a fan favorite and was featured in the U-15 and Berry Smile photobooks. She released her solo photobook, 15" in 2002 and an idol DVD, Pop! followed.

In 2003 Kawabe played the role of Osaka Naru in the live action adaption of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. She also co-hosted the annual Music Express concert. It was announced in the April 2005 edition of Love Berry that Kawabe would be departing from the magazine.
