Information

Han Hyo Joo was discovered at a teenage beauty pageant in 2003. She made her acting debut in the campus sitcom Nonstop 5 in 2005, was an MC for Inkigayo beginning on May 20, 2005, and was enrolled as a freshman at Dongguk University studying theater and film. Han acquired a small role in the 2005 film My Boss, My Teacher but surprised many when she, a newcomer whom initially auditioned for a smaller role, replaced Sung Yuri as the lead actress in the drama Spring Waltz. Yoon Seok Ho, the producer, was confident in his decision to cast Han stating "Just wait and see. I didn’t just find an actress to play the heroine, I found the heroine herself". The drama was also broadcast in several Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Macao, and the Phillipines and made Han into an international Hallyu star. Yet despite much press, the drama failed to attract many viewers.
After Spring Waltz ended, Han stated she was afraid of acting again, she knew nothing about the craft while shooting the drama, and blamed herself for the series’ disappointing performance saying her acting "wasn’t good enough". The actress then chose to star in a low budget independent film called Ad-Lib Night to hone her acting, and was cast as the lead actress in the 2007 drama By Land By Sky. Han then starred in the 2008 historical drama Iljimae, and played the lead actress in the 2008 film Dallyeora Jajeongeo.
In 2009 Han was cast as the lead actress in the drama Brilliant Legacy. The drama topped viewer ratings for six weeks in a row in South Korea amongst all television shows, peaking at a record 47% in viewership. It increased Han's popularity and gave her an array of endorsement deals and media attention.
