Hinagata Akiko made her debut in the dorama Obenkyou in 1992. Two years later, she was chosen as the Fuji TV Visual Queen of the Year. She also won the grand prize at the 10th Annual Japan Megane Best Dress Awards. She became the #1 Gravure Idol of 1996 when she won the grand prix at the 33rd Annual Golden Arrow Awards. But, she shifted her carrer from gravure idol to actress in 1997 when she joined the agency Yellow Cab. She would be with the company untill 2004 when she switch to her current agency, SUNS ENTERTAINMENT. She also became an image character for a scuba diving company in the same year.

Hinagata made her singing debut in 1995 with the single "Egao no Yokan". She wished that her singing career was produced by Komuro Tetsuya but it didn't happen. Instead, her music career was produced by access's Asakura Daisuke.

In 1998, she married commercial director Yamamoto Kazutogi. Two years, the couple celebrated the birth of their first child, a baby girl. However, Hinagata divorced from Kazutogi in 2003.
