In 1988, Watase and then-unknown backband started the band Lindberg, which became a mega success in Japan. Also, during that time, she became a radio personality and went various radio programs including All Night Nippon.

She released her first album, message d'amour, in 1995. Two years later, she married her Lindberg bandmate Hirakawa Tatsuya and gave birth to the couple's first son in 1999 and daughter in 2003. But when Lindberg broke up in 2002, Watase took a break from the music world to focus more on her family. She went on to produce her own children's brand clothing, Ontembaar, in 2006.

In 2009, to celebrate her 40th birthday, Watase Maki held a live concert, entitled "Present". There, she announced that Lindberg was getting back together and she would be back as the main vocals.
