Last week, it was revealed that Utada Hikaru recorded a new song as the ending theme for “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo” (Evangelion Shingekijoban Q), which opened in Japan this past weekend. Titled “Sakura Nagashi,” this is her first new song since she went on hiatus in 2010, but it has been emphasized that this does not signal her return to her singing career.
Sources say that despite Utada’s hiatus, the movie’s production staff fervently asked her to do the ending theme song, so she agreed and wrote “Sakura Nagashi.” Utada previously sang “Beautiful World” as the “Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone” theme song, and she also sang a remix of that song for “Evangelion: 2.0 You Can.”
“Sakura Nagashi” will be released as a DVD single on December 26, but ringtones for the song became available on November 17. Sadamoto Yoshiyuki, the character designer for “Evangelion,” illustrated the single’s cover jacket (pictured above).
The music video has also been made available online for a limited time.
Anime News Network reports that “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo” earned over 1.1 billion yen over the weekend to set the opening weekend box office record for 2012, and it also set new 1-day records for attendance and revenue at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater.
