Yoshimoto Miyoko was born in 1969 as the second daughter in Onoda, Yamaguchi Prefecture. In 1983, while a 3rd year student in middle school, Yoshimoto auditioned for the KBC Kyusu Asahi Audition and appeared at the 5th Annual Music Festival but didn't win. However, a little while later, she was scouted by a Teichiku Record agent and began to travel between Yamaguchi Prefecture and Fukuoka to begin training. That training paid off as she signed with Giei Promotion in 1984 and released her first single, entitled "Shiroi Basketball Shoes", a year later. Her sales were a moderate success but she didn't become a big hit as she was beaten out by Nakayama Miho, Minamino Yoko, Honda Minako, and Saito Yuki who all debuted musically the same year as Yoshimoto.

In 1990, Yoshimoto won the Theatre Rookie of the Year Award at the 28th Golden Arrow Sho for the musicial Okuni. Six years later, she married actor Kanayama Kazuhiko and gave birth to their first daughter in 2001.
