Casshern

From generasia

Casshern (キャシャーン) is a Japanese media franchise about an android hero who fights robots to protect humans. The series debuted as Shinzou Ningen Casshern in 1973 and was later adapted into an OVA series in 1993, a live-action film directed by Kiriya Kazuaki in 2004 and a new anime TV series in 2008. Through many versions, only the main characters were kept, each adaption presents a new story. Aside from the 1993 OVA, although the early United States releases translated "キャシャーン" as "Casshan", the right spelling is always "Casshern".

Shinzou Ningen Casshern (1973)

Shinzou Ningen Casshern (新造人間キャシャーン) or Neo-Human Casshan (in the United States) is the original idea of all later adaptions. It was aired from October 2nd, 1973 to June 25th, 1974. The story focuses on Casshern, a cyborg who fights robots to protect humans. He was originally a human named Azuma Tetsuya but was turned to a "shinzo ningen (新造人間; neo-human)" by his father, Dr. Azuma Kotaro. In his journey, he was accompanied by Luna - a beautiful girl and Friender - a robotic dog.

The opening and ending theme are "Tatakae! Casshern (たたかえ! キャシャーン; Fight! Casshern)" and "Ore wa Shinzou Ningen (おれは新造人間; I'm a Neo-Human)", both songs were performed by Sasaki Isao.

Casshan (1993)

Casshan (キャシャーン) or Casshan: Robot Hunter (in the United States) is the 1993 four episodes OVA adaption of the series. Most of the idea is based on the original Shinzou Ningen Casshern. This time, "キャシャーン" is officially translated as "Casshan" in the logo of both Japanese and English releases. The story is set in a near future, when the planet was conquered by robots leaded by the "Black King", an android hero appears and protects humans. It is later revealed that he is a human turned to cyborg by his father, an expert scientist who engineered the super androids race now threatening to destroy mankind. In order to atone for his father's sins, Casshern decided to become a machine to fight robots and save humans.

The opening and ending theme are "Casshan ~Kaze no Bohyou~ (キャシャーン ~風の墓標~; Casshan ~The Gravestone of Wind~)" by Kageyama Hironobu and "Kibou Shigosen ~Horizon Blue~ (希望子午線 ~ホライズン・ブル~; The Meridian of Hope ~Horizon Blue~)" by Columbia Animation Stars.

CASSHERN (2004)

CASSHERN Poster

CASSHERN (キャシャーン) is a dark science fiction / action film released on April 24, 2004, written, directed and edited by Kiriya Kazuaki. It is half based on the minor 70's anime Shinzou Ningen Casshern (新造人間キャシャーン) and William Shakespear's Hamlet, though it has many aspects of George Orwell's 1984.

CASSHERN was one of the first films to be completely filmed on a greenscreen where actors act in front of the screen and computers add all the details after the shooting (this is called 'Digital Backlot').

CASSHERN is set in the mid 21st century in a parallel universe to ours, in which the planet is ruled over by totalian governments and has been ravaged by biological weapons. A geneticist, Azuma-hakase Kotaro, believes that he has found a way to rejuvenate human body parts, but the experiment goes deadly wrong and something has been inadvertantly created which threatens the existance of humanity itself.

The film had mixed reviews; as Kiriya was praised for it's aesthetics, but was shunted for his overly complex storyline. His defence of this is that it was meant to be like a dream, or somebody's nightmare. He stated that nightmares don't have to make sense, but you have to go with the flow of ideas.
