Haru Nemuri (春ねむり) is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter, poetry rapper, and track-maker. She has been associated with several labels over the course of her career thus far--in order, LOW HIGH WHO? PRODUCTION, disc label records, Perfect Music, and currently TO3S RECORDS.

Information

Beginnings and Sayonara, Youthphobia

Haru Nemuri's music career started at the age of 17, where she played the synth in a band called Yukue Fumei. The band eventually dissolved after releasing one mini-album, but at age 21 she began her career as a poetry rapper under the name Haru Nemuri, calling herself the "Singing Ultimate Weapon". She performed as the opening act of BAYCAMP 2016 despite not having any officially released music at the time. She produced a collaboration song, "Sayonara Boku no Cinderella," with Tsutaya Koichi, and it was selected as "THE HOTTEST TRACK OF THE MONTH" by Watabe Ken from Un-Jash on his J-WAVE radio program "GOLD RUSH". Her first mini-album was released one month later in October through LOW HIGH WHO? PRODUCTION. In December, she appeared on the BS-TBS television program "Ikuze, Band Tengoku!!". She was also a featured artist for two other LOW HIGH WHO artists, providing vocals and lyrics for GOMESS's track "sore eyes," and NELHATE's track "Ghost Noise".

Atom Heart Mother

On January 10, 2017, her 22nd birthday, she held her first solo concert, which was called "Hitori de Nererumon! vol. 1". It was completely sold out. Then, on January 28th, she appeared at BAYCAMP 201701. In March, she released an EP called Kaibutsu-tachi no Iru Tokoro. It featured re-recordings and remixes of a track from her debut album, including one remix done by Haru herself. In June, she made her first appearance on national television on the Nippon TV program Buzz Rhythm!. She then released her second mini-album, Atom Heart Mother, which was selected by Tower Records as one of its Tower RecoMmend feature. In July and August, she appeared at GFB'17 (Tsukuba Rock Festival) and ROCK IN JAPAN 2017.

In August, she wrote the song "kick in the world" which was used as the theme song for the movie ; the eternal / spring starring Imou Haruka. Then in September, she released her first single, "Hello @ New World / Torikobosareta Machi Kara Ai wo Komete," which was co-written with Goto Mariko. In October, she held another solo concert--her first solo concert at a hall. In November, she was part of a unit called moilips created to promote Shiseido's pharmaceutical lip balm. She wrote lyrics and rapped for the song, which was called "Hibiwareta Hibi." Finally, in December, she released a song called "buzz light ear" with sry the lateman.

Haru to Shura and international recognition

In February 2018, Haru began participating in other artists' works as a writer. She provided the song "Last Romance" to avex girl group TOKYO GIRLS' STYLE. The song was composed, written, and arranged by her, and she also remixed the track and helped with vocal direction. In March, she appeared in a web commercial for "au Hikari" with pro-wrestler Chono Masahiro, where she rapped and danced. In April, she appeared at her first event in Taiwan, an outdoor festival called SPRING SCREAM 2018. A few days after that, on April 11th, she finally released her first full album, Haru to Shura. The album received praise from many sources including music critic and YouTuber Anthony Fantano.

In late June, she held a self-organized event called "Rock n' Roll wa Shinanai" at Shibuya Chelsea Hall. She also provided another song for TOKYO GIRLS' STYLE, the song "Kiss Hitotsu de", which was used as a B-side for their 25th single. In July, she appeared alongside SAKI (from ORESKABAND) as a featured artist for a song called "Kakkoi Dance" by THE BASSONS on their album Katame ga Kataru! Band ga Hajiku! Tataku!. She appeared at another festival in Taiwan, called 2018 New Taipei City Gongliao International Ocean Music Festival, at the end of July as well.

In late August, she finally released "kick in the world", the song which had previously been heard as the theme for the movie ; the eternal / spring the year before. The single again received international attention, with American website Stereogum giving it the #1 spot on their "THE 5 BEST SONGS OF THE WEEK" post.

In September, she released a digital single called "i wanna". On October 7th and 8th, she appeared at yet another Taiwanese music festival, "Giant Music Festival 8.0 BEASTIE ROCK", and "Kick in the Beastie" at Revolver. On October 12th, she released another digital single, "Tokyo (Ewig Wiederkehren)", which was a remake/re-recording of one of the songs from her debut mini-album. Finally, in November, she appeared at a two-man show called "KNOCKIN'ON HEAVEN'S DOOR" at LOFT HEAVEN in Shibuya, with Matsunaga Tenma from urbangarde.

2019, focus on international activities

In 2019, Haru focused more on her international activities outside of Japan and created more songs for other artists. In January, she provided the song "Kasei no Koibito" to Yoneko, and appeared at "City Roars! Festival 2019" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She then made another appearance at a Taiwanese festival in "Awakening Great Warm Festival 2019". In February, she provided lyrics for the song "Hikaru yo" to TOKYO GIRLS' STYLE for their 26th single. In March, she collaborated with Goto Mariko again for her first Asian tour. As part of this, she performed at events in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Taiwan.

In April, she re-released Haru to Shura on vinyl--her first full-length analog record--through a French label for the European market, and from May through June, she performed in Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom on her first European tour "HARU NEMURI 'Haru to Shura' European Tour 2019".

In October, she provided the song "Ever After" to TOKYO GIRLS' STYLE, which they released as a digital single first and later included on a single released in 2020 as well. Haru rounded out 2019 with two international features. First, the inclusion of a re-recorded "kick in the world" being included on a CD released by Anthony Fantano called The Needle Drop LP. Second, she appeared as a featured artist for Hong Kong-based instrumental rock band Prune Deer, providing vocals and lyrics for their song "Return" which appeared on the album Insufficient Postage.

LOVETHEISM

Haru started off 2020 with her radio program "Nemuissu.com" broadcasting on FM Yokohama, every Sunday starting in January. On January 10th, she released the digital single "Fanfare". In March, she released her third mini-album, LOVETHEISM. The album was released physically in June with a CD version for Japan and an analog version in Europe and the US. A European and US tour were planned, but eventually had to be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

SHUNKA RYOUGEN

In June 2020, Haru also released a limited edition single through Bandcamp, the demo version of a song called "Heart of Gold". All proceeds for the song were donated to the NAACP.

2021 saw Haru releasing many digital singles which would eventually culminate in the release of her second full album. First, she opened the year in January with the digital single "bang". In March, she performed at the online version of SXSW 2021, and was named as one of the "15 Best Acts of the New York Times" by music critic Jon Pareles as one of the "15 Best Acts of the New York Times." This was followed by the release of the the digital single "Inori Dake ga Aru". In May, she released the digital single "Seventh Heaven," which was used as the theme for the movie Enrakuchou de Aimashou (changed to Simply Colorless in English). She was also put in charge of the narration for the preview video of the film. In July, she released the digital single "Old Fashioned", and in August, she provided the song "Ever Blue" to Hololive v-tuber Omaru Polka. At the end of August, she held a request solo live called "Déconstruction vol.5" at Kichijoji SHUFFLE. In September, she appeared on the American radio station KEXP's annual project "Live on KEXP at Home". Finally, in October, she released the digital single "Déconstruction".

In 2022, she kicked off the year in January by announcing that her second full album, Shunka Ryougen, would be released in April. Her US tour, which had been postponed twice, also finally took place in March with several sold-out dates. At the beginning of April, she released the song "Ikiru" as a lead-in digital single to her new album.

Later in the year she announced another international tour in support of the Shunka Ryougen album, with 15 stops throughout North America throughout the month of October, and included appearances in Thailand and Taiwan as well. However, after only three performances on the tour, she tested positive for COVID-19 and the following six tour dates had to be postponed. She resumed the tour Dallas, TX and completed the remaining six shows, with the postponed shows tentatively planned for a reschedule in March 2023.

Additionally, the Shunka Ryougen album was released on vinyl on September 12th through Specific Recordings.
